A home lift is a long-term fixture, so it is worth choosing with care. Four questions narrow the field quickly.
How many floors, and how much space is there?
Count the stops and measure the space the lift would take. A home lift can be built into a stairwell void, beside a staircase or as a new shaft on the outside of the house. Compact drives need less pit and headroom, which matters when you are adding a lift to a house that is already built.
Who will use it?
If the lift is for someone who uses a wheelchair, the cabin and door opening must be sized for it. If it is for elderly family members, look for a smooth start and stop, a low-effort door and a clear alarm and intercom.
Which door type suits the house?
- Automatic doors are the easiest to use and the best for wheelchairs and walkers.
- Manual doors cost less and are simple to maintain.
- Glass doors and cabins let light through and suit open stairwells.
What happens in a power cut?
Ask how the lift behaves when the power fails. A good home lift lowers to the nearest floor on battery and opens its doors, so nobody is stuck between floors.
Finish and noise
Wood, glass and stainless steel cabins all suit different interiors. Ask to hear a working lift, because running noise matters a great deal in a home.
